Defence Long Service Medal This award established on 26 May 1998. The medal recognises 15 years efficient service in the Defence Force whether as an officer or member of the other ranks and whether the service occurred in the regular or reserve components of the Australian Defence Force, or a mix of service in both. Persons who had at least 10 years service on or after 20 April 1982 and before 20 April 1994 can elect to receive a Defence Force Service Award, rather than the Defence Long Service Medal. Those who have not achieved this length of service by date, will, at the completion of their 15 years service be recognised by the Defence Long Service Medal. Eventually the Defence Force Service Awards will be phased out and the Defence Long Service Medal will be the only Defence-specific long service award. Clasps to the medal are made for each period of 5 years additional efficient service after the award of the Medal.
