AUSTRALIA 1939 TO 2000

These pages have been developed to assist those interested in military honours and awards, campaign and service medals.

Until 1991 all Military Honours and Awards, for all Australian military personnel, was the Commonwealth (British) Awards list. This changed when Australia developed its own decorations and service awards and adopted in 1991. This ceased the practice of Commonwealth Awards being awarded to its citizens.

Like the British and USA, the Australian military system maintains the four levels of gallantry. This is identified site with a special linked page on the next page.

This site only covers the period from 1939 to 2000. It is anticipated that updates will be included as required. Where possible all variations, due to service and events that over lap each other, are included.

However not all foreign medals and awards are shown as the aim of this site is to enable the reader to distinguish and identify the most likely scenario they will encounter. It is also hoped that frauds and wannabes will be identified with a greater understanding of military medals.

The practice of wearing miniature medals instead of the full size medals is against protocol and accepted practice. Although a civilian is absolved from service dress regulations, incumbent on military personnel, ex-service members are encouraged to continue to follow service protocol and medal etiquette.
